March 23-25, 2016 in Moscow hosted the Fifth International Conference on HIV / AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
The conference is held once in two years. Therefore, there were great expectations and hopes. 2500 delegates from 79 countries took part in the forum. Among them are leading world scientists, politicians, civil leaders, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, people living with HIV. The conference was held under the slogan “Global partnership in combating HIV / AIDS: every life is valuable”.
The forum was attended by 34 representatives of the United States, 64 – Belarus, 73 – Ukraine. The delegation of Kazakhstan numbered 127 people. This is the most numerous country delegation after Russia. Among them, the public figure – A. Samakova, the adviser of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection – M. Kulzhanov, the Deputy General Director of the AIDS Center – I. Petrenko, the Director of UNAIDS in Kazakhstan – A. Goleusov and others.
The work of the conference was conducted in three areas: “Promoting International Development”, “Science and Medicine”, “Civil Society”. Kazakhstan’s achievements in the fight against the HIV epidemic were worthy of mention in the report of the Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation A. Popova: “HIV prevalence does not exceed 5 percent in key groups, half AIDS service NGOs receive grants from the state, mother-to-child transmission of HIV is reduced to 2 percent” . With interest were the reports of Kazakhstanis: G. Akhmetova, head. Therapeutic and prophylactic department of the Almaty AIDS Center “The main results of research on the causes of low adherence to ART among PLHIV in Kazakhstan”, L. Chubukova, the project coordinator of the Central Asia AIDS PLHIV “Gender Analysis of National HIV / AIDS Policies in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan”, O. Ibragimova, advocate of the Kazakhstan Union of People Living with HIV “The experience of involving the community of people who use injecting drugs in reducing the incidence of HIV in Kazakhstan” and others.
All the days at the conference were actively held on the Women’s Playground and the UNAIDS Open Discussion Platform. Here they talked and argued about many things: media, gender, sports, personality in the fight against HIV.
The closing ceremony of the conference was held by the Assistant to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation G. Onischenko, the Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation A. Popov, the Assistant to the UN Secretary General Luis Loures. Winners of the competition for the best social video of the decade on HIV / AIDS and a contest on “How to popularize preventive research on HIV among young people” were awarded. Among the prize-winners Kazakhstan documentary filmmaker Ruben Ghazaryan. The public fund “Anvers” from Ust-Kamenogorsk received a grant on reproductive health.
At the end of the event, the co-chairs of the Organizational and Program Committees adopted a final statement in which participants appealed to governments of EECA countries, international organizations, the business community, civil and religious organizations to make every effort to put an end to the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
